USB Drive cant be formatted (Permission Denied)

i bought a sony 2gb flash drive about 6 months ago. just recently when i loaded my plasma screens new firmware onto it and plugged it into the tv to upgrade it the tv would not read anything on it so i just thought it was the tv.
but when i plugged it back into my mac it asked me to intialize it and says the size of the disk is only 956mb.. any attempts at formatting it with disk utility come back with "Access denied"
ls /dev/disk? responds with the disk being at /dev/disk1 and the newfs_hfs command also responds with access denied.
does anyone know of a way to force the disk to be formatted by terminal command or app?
