Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License , the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone.

Wow old thread. Linux is an operating system just like OSX or Windows.
It is more "straight to the point" and less "pretty". No fancy UI.

It's an open source OS. When some software for Mac and PC you have to pay for, or just get trials of, everything on Linux is completely free. It's basically a conglomeration of developers making applications for the greater good. It allows the user to have much more control over their system. It's also good for starting out devs to get a feeling for writing programs and such on, since there is so much open source support, and a big community to help. A lot of people prefer it to Windows or Mac because it's much more to the point, not as much fluff.
