I have jailbroken my ipod to 4.2.1 using Greenpois0n RC5b2 almost 2 years ago.
It is the 4th gen 8GB iPod touch
I want to upgrade to the latest version that will allow me access to Cydia. I wanted to do the 5.0.1 jailbreak, but I wasn't sure what my current iOS has to be in order for it to work. What should I do to jailbreak it to a newer iOS? I am not sure if I must upgrade to the latest iOS or not, or if I can just leave it the way it is...
PS. What should I do to have all my customizations come back? Like my theme, lockscreen theme, cydia add-ons, apps and etc...

First you will have to see if ya have the blobs for that firmware and if ya never been to 5.0 don't think you will be able to. 6.0.1 will be ya only option

oh okay then. Then I rather wait until an unthethered version is out. Is there a way to keep all my customizations? A lot of customizations were done close to about 2 years ago and I don't even remember what I did. Like a couple stuff I added with Siri and a lockscreen theme that I installed that took me days to get working.
Also if a unethered version comes out, will I be able to go straight to that? Or must I upgrade the OS to 6.0.1 then go to the untethered version?

Cydia will keep all ya stuff on account that was paid. Since ya on iOS 4 I wouldn't think that what ya have will work on 6.0 but I could be wrong depending on the dev of the tweaks ya got if they updated it since then.
As far as updating yes you will have to go to 6.0.1

Okay, thanks a lot!
I just hope that the jailbreak comes out before a newer IOS comes out
