How to update jailbroken 2nd gen itouch 3.1.3 to 4.0?

I have a 2nd gen ipod touch jailbroken at 3.1.3 that I would like to update to the current firmware. I can't seem to update it through Itunes though and keep getting error 3194. I'm hoping there is someone here that can either walk me through this, or can point me to a semi-beginner/ idiot-proof guide on how to do so! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1) Wouldn't recommend 4.0 for that device. If anything, 4.2.1.
2) 3194 is due to not having or not using SHSHs.
3) If it's a 2G just hit upgrade in iTunes and jb it with Redsn0w.

Edit: or greenpois0n. That might be easier.

okay...it is a 2G, but everytime i hit update in itunes i get the error 3194...how do I get around that?
