Jailbreak question re: ipod touch 3g with 3.1.2 (MC008LL)

I've jailbroken with blackrain before, but was wanting a jailbreak that wasn't tethered.

Should I uprade to a 4.* OS? If so, which one?

What's the best way to jailbreak?

Well it's kinda late to upgrade to 4.3.5 because the jailbreak for that is tethered. I would save my SHSH blobs for the 3.x, then upgrade to 4.x, save SHSH blobs for that, and then see if you want to downgrade back. Idk if jailbreakme would work on 3.x anymore.

If you're running 3.1.2, and are NOT jailbroken,
you can use Spirit to get an untethered jailbreak on it.

If you're running 3.1.2 with a tethered JB, Spirit won't work (unless you restore an original 3.1.2 firmware first).

Unfortunately, unless you've saved SHSH blobs already, 4.x will only be tethered, from here on in.
