Help updating my ipod to 4.x

Ok i have bought an ipod for my son from my sister. I jailbroke it for her a few month ago on 3.1.3. I now would like it up to ios4 as some games my son wants require ios4. itunes states i can update to 4.2 when i plug it in (why not 4.3 like my iphone is offered?)so shall i just update to 4.2 and jailbreak with redsnow?
I do have blobs saved 3.1.3 - 4.2 but i dont need them to get to 4.2 and jailbreak do i? Also, the ipod model number is MC08*** so does that make it an 'MC model' not sure if that makes a difference in this case. any help would be great. Thanks

It's probably a second generation, 4.2 is the last firmware they released for that gen.
