Default Ipod Touch 1G - bricked or not? Help

Have a 16gb Ipod Touch 1G. Nothing displays on screen. When connected to PC, Itunes says it must be restored. Attempt restore and receive 1601 error. Tried Ziphone 2.6b to fix Nvram Ziphone reports that Ipod is in DFU mode and cannot proceed with fix and says to restore with Itunes. Can't restore. Tried Tinyumbrella, Ireb, winpw. Since its recognized by Itunes, I'm hoping it can be fixed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Oh yeah, error 1601. I got that error when I was at 2.0 trying to restore back to 1.1.5.
I got out of that by updating to any firmware higher than 2.0. Just google 3.1 or something.

Also might wanna try another computer. Have you tried a standard "upgrade" rather than shift+restoring?

I dont know, man. still think your downgrading. my ipod is exactly the same as yours.
Lets get this over with. On your computer, go to your HardDrive<The house icon on the side<Library<iTunes. Now there should be a folder named "iPod software updates"
open the folder and tell me all the files with file names you see.

I don't know the current firmware on the unit. When Itunes opens and says to restore it recognizes that it is an Ipod, but cannot identify the serial number or firmware version. That information must be corrupt on the unit. I'll try anything you can think of. Thanks for your time.

OK. lets get started. Go back to the "iPod software updates" folder, open it, then i want you to delete "iPod1,1.1.5restore" file. Next, go back to your iPod. Press and hold the home button while connecting it to your pc. iTunes should open. THEN CLICK RESTORE. Agree to terms and conditions. If im correct it will download ios 3.1. wait for it to finish. Then see if it restores. Hope this works!

Almost forgot, the firmware that iTunes will download,is the firmware you had installed before your iPod bricked.

ur using the wrong firmware image file....
Go here and download the firmware that fits your itouch: iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download

Perferably id download 3.0 since i think thats as far as the 1st gen will go.

when you plug in your ipod, open itunes and hold down shift and click restore. when a box comes up find the location in which you downloaded your firmware and then use it. it should restore. IF it doesnt try a different usb port and try again. still doesn't work? try a different computer.

Sorry th3AmazingAth3ist, I have to disagree. Simply connect your ipod to your computer then click
restore. Not only that you get the original file, it will download at the fastest speed possible on apple servers.
