iOS 4.3 will be out soon. Save your 4.2.1 blobs now! (Public Service Announcement)
Whether you are running 4.2.1 now or not, you can save blobs for it. Soon after 4.3 comes out, you won't be able to get blobs for 4.2.1 much longer. So if you haven't done it yet, download TinyUmbrella today, connect your iThing to your computer by USB, turn off iTunes if it starts, then run TinyUmbrella and when it recognizes your device, click Save SHSH. Then click the Log tab and watch it do its thing. Let's not be seeing dozens of posts in the future from people who got there ipods in 2010 saying "I want to downgrade/upgrade to 4.2.1 but I don't have blobs". (except for those devices for which 4.2.1 will be the highest supported version, of course)

No, iTunes doesn't automatically update your firmware.
TinyUmbrella website:
The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
By the way, there is this thing called Google...if you enter TinyUmbrella the first hit is the website...

Yeah, I was feeling a little snarky, but gee, it's easier to cut & paste it into the browser search bar than to ask the question here...
I think it's supposed to work with the Iphone 3gs, ipt 3g, and all model 4's (except I don't know about Verizon). Models iPhone 3g and ipt 2g are dead-ended at 4.2.1 from what I hear. At least all of this was true for 4.3beta3. 4.3 is due out Valentines day apparently.Last edited by lanulos; 02-07-2011 at 11:32 AM.

Um, maybe I misunderstood your first question? I don't understand why you would have to wait for a 4.3 jailbreak. If you have your 4.2.1 blobs saved with TinyUmbrella, you shouldn't have any problem jailbreaking 4.2.1, even if you have to restore or upgrade to 4.2.1.

For ip2g users, save your SHSH Blobs through Cydia.
