advice on 8gb 2g/3g jailbroken 3.1.3

Hi, just got traded a 3rd gen 8gb ipod touch, which i'm aware is a 2nd gen for all intensive purposes.
its already jailbroken with 3.1.3
its loaded with apps i don't want, metal music, and another persons settings. i'd like to wipe it, and, i THINK update it to something ios 4 or later.

few questions, i should be following guides for MC 2g ipods right?
i'm thinking i'd like something 4.1 or later, but mainly just to access more apps(i've got iphone 3.1.3)

i'd like advice on what versions to upgrade/downgrade to and from,
and what version jailbreak i should try for?
deffinetly looking to stay untethered, as i'll prolly be gifting it to my uncle(who gifted me his iphone after cydia crashed on him)

or, if for some reason 3.1.3 is a better choice for this ipod, if there is a simple way to clean it up.

oh, i've loaded tinyumbrella, and saved SHSH, it spit out a long list of errors about requested build no longer on cydia, and saved 4.0 4.1 and 4.2.1

Having those SHSHs saved means you get to choose which fw you wanna go to. I'd say 4.1 is a good one. Run the TSS Server in TinyUmbrella, open iTunes, and shift+restore to a stock 4.1 fw. Jailbreak with Limera1n or Greenpois0n.

Edit: I also highly recommend disabling multitasking and wallpaper for that device, it can cause a bit of a slowdown

do i need to have tinyumbrella open? or will shift restore work the way i'm accustomed with my iphone?

Yes you'll need tinyumrella open or iTunes won't let you restore. TU bypasses the error 3194 which occurs when Apple stops signing a firmware version. You are utilizing your SHSHs for 4.1 therefor you need to have the TSS Server running to restore

All you do is run the TSS Server then shift+restore as normal.

Hmm, this is troubling. itunes shot error 3004. set ipod to recovery mode, and Tinyumbrella no longer see's ipod. nor lists shsh files or recent devices(i checked, and the files it saved are still on my drive)
i think it froze sometime before i started the restore, but can't sure....
tried again(as itunes see's it fine) and got an 'ipod update server cannot be contacted error'
i'm running tinyumbrella as admin...

any workarounds?
did i perhaps get the wrong firmware?

read a bit more on 3004, and it sounds like it might have been one step away, had TU not froze, just need'd to kick from recovery mode? too late now i'm assuming, waiting for 4.2.1 to download, as i'm hoping it will at least restore correctly, will i still be able to shift restore to 4.1 with TU(assuming it doesn't lock again) ?

Are you absolutely sure you had SHSHs saved for 4.1? Because I for 3004 before when I tried restoring without SHSHs

Yeah, i'm Positive i have shsh 4.1 saved, as well as 4.0 and 4.2.1, i'v got them all copied to a second folder as well.
Looks like this was deffinetly my own fualt, for Runnning too many applications at once... or, perhaps even more annoyingly, for attempting to use the program, without restarting first after installing(as i also had to install java just to get TU to run)
sadly, my girlfriend started pestering me just before i started the restore, and i had already open'd a movie on my second monitor, and tryed the whole process with minimal system resorcess... my system had already been a bit buggy and ram lagged....

just restarted windows. plugged in the ipod, TU popped up, and showed the ipod as a recently used device(remember, when i open'd TU just after it FROZE, it showed no recent devices, thats when i dug through my directories, and copied the shsh files it had saved, just incase) TU had locked completly during the update....

sorry for the time lag, as i was then 'encouraged' to finish the movie... and promptly fell asleep.
TU now shows the ipod as a recent device, but can't see it plugged in(however, TU open'd automatically when i plugged in the ipod... as opposed to itunes as had happen'd before the restart)

i'm going to dig around on google for a while, to see if there might be a way to get TU to see the device, now that its stuck in recovory mode, or if this little manual ecid button might be of use... i'll most likely be waiting till tomorrow, unless i find or hear something concrete.


again just for clarification, any risk in restoring to the latest firmware, assuming 4.2.1 is latest? would i then be able to restore to 4.1 and start over? as, at this point TU *seems* to be working...

*edit* found my problem. somewhere in the midst of getting everything set up the first time(amongst the confusion of trying to be present in RL, choose open a movie, and not blow off my GF), i had open'd and closed TU a number of times, and neglected to run as admin the final time, during the save and restore itself...
hence TU not finding my recent device as admin after the crash... i'm sure this can account for the crash and error itself as well....

found iRecovery, got ipod back to 3.1.3. ran TU as admin, started TSS, ran itunes, tried shift update with 4.1, 3004'd again. device dissapeared from TU(could not kick from recov)

recovored again with iRecovery. pulled up TU as admin again, now saving SHSH(this is only the second time, skipped this after running irecov the first time) posting Log...

Get TU 4.01.01, there is an option to manually "Kick Device out of Recovery Mode"

It looks like you have them then. You should be able to restore to 4.1 fine. Try another computer. If you've messed with your host file you should set them back to normal then run the TSS server then restore to 4.1.

You could try a custom firmware to 4.1. I'm not sure if Sn0wbreeze 2.0.2 or 2.1 supports that device, but you could try.

maybe you didn't get a chance to read all the posts, after the ipod 3004's, its sent directly to recovery-loop and TU no longer see's it.
I'm running the latest version of TU.

Thanks, was sorta thinking that myself, was actually contemplating asking if this might help... i'm running XP on this machine, my laptop has 7 if that might be more effective(i was sorta assuming the opposite)
i was hoping to NOT install itunes on that machine(forgive me for having something against apple apps on my windows[or linux] machines... just something about the way they require proprietary hardware/software)(oh yeah, thats why i have to jailbreak in the firstplace...)

but i just remembered i have my cousins laptop with me for a couple weeks, i'll try on that first.

little tipsy at the moment(just got home from dinner, see earlier posts)
got an appointment round noonish as well, prolly going to give this a shot tomorrow night....

** update, 2/8/11 ***
finally got around to messing with that bastard little ipod again, my laptop was able restore/update to 4.1 fine. tried using limera1n, and it didn't really seem to do anything at all, tried a few times, assuming it was missing DFU or something, put it into dfu manually, and it still skipped right over the install process.. so i'm not sure whats up with that, anything to do with it being MC?
used greenpois0n rc5, unknowingly(is rc5 only for 4.2.1?), didnt work, finally found rc4, and got a clean working jailbreak.

i'd really like to find a REAL 3rd gen, or a iphone 3gs.... but i doupt i'll be stumbling on one in the recycling bin anytime soon...
