Ipod Touch 3G downgrade question

Hey, I'm the latest and not-so-greatest individual who is having a problem downgrading from 4.2.1....

Here's my story: I want to Jailbreak, play with the cool kids, be a rebel (etc. etc.). But when I go to Jailbreak and see 4.2.1 is not the way to go, I follow the steps to downgrade to 4.0

I download TinyUmbrella, I record my SHSH, I download the 4.0 software package, I put my touch in DFU mode, then start the TSS server. Everything is going just fine up until this point, (btw I was following the steps at this site Downgrade iOS 4.2 to iOS 4.1, iOS 4.0.1 (iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPod Touch 4G, 3G, 2G) | iPhoneHeat) then I go to upload the 4.0 software package (which matches my SHSH, and bam. I get a software not compatible error, and I'm dead in the water.......

So, my question is this, what do I do? Did I download bogus 4.0? Is there a better place?


Also, I would like to take it back to 3.1.3, but my SHSH is only recorded for 4.0 or 4.1, is it still possible to get back to 3.1.3, cuz it is much better for the battery.

Any help would be awesome!

you can only downgrade to 4.0 and 4.1. yeah it sounds like you may have downloaded 4.0 for another gen iPod or iPhone.

No, it is only illegal to download developer betas such as 4.2b3 and 4.3b1, if you are not a developer.

yep it's fine to download them if they're, what would you say, 'final product' firmware? but yep that's perfectly legal to download them from there.
