I've got a 3G iTouch, which has been JB'd at 3.1.2 (blackra1n) for over a year now, and I've finally run into a real dead end, as my backlight has been disabled. Now this has happened previously, and all I've needed to do to fix it is a quick reset and re-tether. However, this time, no matter how many times I reset or jailbreak it, the backlight won't come back on. I'm pretty sure it's not hardware, as the light did turn on shortly with blackra1n's splash screen during one of my first attempts, but I haven't been able to replicate it since.
Got a bunch of questions, but I'll categorize them in two:
1. How should I go about fixing this? I'm currently going through the process of letting the thing drain itself of power, which is damned hard without a battery-sapping backlight on. It did occur to me that there might be something wrong with the internal system files. If there's something I can delete or modify, I should be able to get to it through SSH. Any help will be much appreciated. I'd like to try at least a few more things before I resort to a hard restore.
2. Even if I do get full functionality back, I have been thinking that it's about time to switch to iOS 4 (would be sad to lose X-theme though D: ). To that end, I have questions (as I have not kept up with iOS past v3 at all): Which version should I go for that'll allow a jailbreak? What are the real differences between 4.0 and 4.1? What can I go for that's untethered? Or would it be better with 4 to stay tethered? Also, how do you get ahold of older FWs, as in download locations (since I believe iTunes simply grabs the latest one)?
hey dude, 4.1 is the best firmware to be on atm. it's stable and the jb untethered. the only way to upgrade to it is with shsh blobs though, I dunno if you'll have any or not though, if you dunno how to check em open cydia and look at the top of the page and that'll tell you
Well, I jumped the gun and tried my last two options. I downloaded 4.1 and did just an update; backlight still did not function following that. Then restored the device using 4.1, and was only able to get the light to flicker for a split-second after coming out of sleep. Started to resign myself to the fact that it might be hardware, but I came back to it a couple hours later, and the backlight was working. O.o Completely inexplicable.
Still worried that it might be an internal issue, so I've already started stress testing it, just in case I do need to turn it in. JB'd with limera1n, got Cydia up and running fine, no issues so far.
I'm guessing that my old iTunes backups are worthless, considering that they're from 3.1.2 and contain apps that are incompatible with 4.1. Not that I'm looking to recover everything, as I have no problem with starting fresh, but did those backups save my Cydia stuff?
Edit: Nope, after another hour or so, I've lost the backlight again. Can not fathom what might have caused it. Guess I'll be looking to use my warranty after all.
