    Default iPod touch Backup

    Here is my situation:
    • I have a 4th generation iPod touch running iOS 4.2.1.
    • I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8.
    • I am a data preservation freak.

Here is what I want to do:
    • Backup my iPod touch completely without using iTunes.
    • BUT Wait: This might not be as hard as you think. I need a program that can basically clone my iPod touch in its entirety, creating a single file that can be used to restore my iPod touch with.
    • Do this without jailbreaking my iPod.

I would think that doing it this way would not require a jailbreak because it would just clone the contents of the iPod in a manner similar to cloning a hard drive.

I am thinking it would have to be jailbroken so you can ssh into root directory. That way you can get to the files and extract them

Well wouldn't it be possible to write something that just ignores the file system privileges.

Wait, I just realized one thing: Could someone write a driver that ignores filesystem privileges?
