Overwhelmed with trying to update a jailbroken 3.2.1 3g touch to 4.x

Ok so i have a 3rd gen itouch 32 gig that is currently jailbroken via blackrain. i jailbroke it over a year ago and have no been keeping up with current jailbreaks. i want to upgrade to 4.x and be able to jailbreak afterwards. please can you guys tell me what steps are most important to take in order to this. i have in fact tried to figure it out on my own but became exetremely over whelmed with information.
please help me out !

First step is to figure out what SHSH you have. You can do this with tiny umbrella or look at the top of your cydia home page.
