Help downgrade itouch 2g 16gb from version 4.2.1 to 4.0.1 to jailbreak

I put the device into DFU mode and held down shift and clicked restore on itunes. I selected the downgrade file and it says, "itunes will erase and restore your ipod to ios 4.0 and will verify the restore with Apple". I clicked the restore option and after it extracts the software, it gave me this message, " The ipod "ipod" cannot be restored at this time because the ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." What may have caused this? Any ideas what to do?

It means it cannot verify the restore because it can't connec to the site. If you have used TinyUmbrella before to save your shsh files, it is probably trying to connect to the Saurik site (cydia) instead of apple, which you will need to downgrade. that site goes down or just gets overloaded sometimes, so you might want to try again later.

This is my 3rd day trying and i just tried to restore normally without the downgrade to 4.0 for the first time and failed to restore. I am going to try it at my pc at work in 2 days because I believe it is the computer and the usb port.

Can it be the file that I downloaded to downgrade or as u said, that it cant connect to the site. I have never installed cydia on the device so I dont think it is trying to connect to that site.
