Unhappy Total newbie. Downgrading 4.2.1 iPod Touch 1G to 3.1.3

this is my first iPod touch and yes it's a 1st Gen from the Bank of the West debit thing (sign up and get a free iPod touch). basically, i plugged it in and did everything required to set up my iPod. then i noticed that i needed to update it. originally, the firmware before i updated the was 3.1.3. since i didnt know that jailbreaking required specifics, i accidentally updated it to 4.2.1. i tried downgrading it just as the steps had shown on this forum but i kept getting an error message, saying that the 3.1.3 ipsw was NOT compatible. please help. i dont want to redownload another firmware again....it took forever. >.<

You can't update the 1st gen. iPod touch to 4.2.1. Are you sure it's a first generation.

No offense but I'm 100% sure it's not a first gen. Does it have a flat back no controls for volume. Can you post a picture of it maybe.

You can jailbreak 4.2.1 if it's not an mc model. To check go to settings general about and check the model number. If it's mb model you can jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.6b6. If not you may need to downgrade. Thanks for the pictures. It's okay to make mistakes too

A jailbreak on an MC model might be tethered. I'm not sure

An mc model will be tethered. I'd like you to check if you have your shsh's saved. Please download this: The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella to check. If you have your 4.1 shsh's saved let me no so I can get you a link to the firmware you need to downgrade.

You downloaded it right? Open it and your device should be connected. Click save my shsh's. Open log. Then after a couple of minutes it should be done. See if anything was saved. If you are lucky you will have shsh's for 4.1. Let me know so I can explain more.
