ipod touch 3g on 3.1.3 problems

I have an ipod touch 3g on 3.1.3 and am currently jailbroken. Well things are starting to mess up and I want to do a restore. The current version of iOS out right now is 4.2 and I don't want to upgrade and lose my jailbreak. I have shsh stored on cydia for everything between 3.1.3 and current. I tried updating to 4.0 using the shift update and choosing the ipsw, but got error 3194, I don't know what to do now, ipod acting weird and can't do anything without losing jailbreak. Does anyone have any ideas for me to try?
