I have the iPod Touch 2G MB531LL already jailbroken and working fine. I would like to know, is it possible to upgrade to the latest software from iTunes (4.2) without losing anything and keep it jailbroken. IF so please let me know the exact procedure step-by-step to accomplish this.
Every time I download RedSn0w (the zip file) and try to extract it I get an error. Is there a place where I can get a working zip file copy? I've gone through Google and they all don't extract.
FIRST: I want to thank you for your help, patience and knowledge here! Most would be flaming by now. I appreciate this very much that you have the experience! I created the Pwnage folder on my desktop and now have the RedSn0w zip and exe in it. I'm now downloading the 4.2.1 update which I'll move there as well. I'm following the recommended instructions here: iClarified - iPod touch - How to Jailbreak Your iPod Touch 2G Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.2.1]
After it's downloaded I hold my breath and cross my fingers. I looked all over iTunes for a way to backup everything from my iPod and can't find a thing. So I'm flying by the seat of my pants it seems.
First the good news: I was able to upgrade to version 4.2.1 and have maybe half the apps I had. I use to be able to put a 5th app in my bottom board instead of the normal 4. Can't do that anymore. I still have Cydia but there is no Installer app and I need the Installer.app as well as the Customizer.app and can't find them anywhere. Obviously I'll be stuck till I get more help.
Installer doesnt exist anymore. it is just cydia now. Five icon dock is what you were using before for five icons, that is in cydia but not sure if is compatible with 4.2.1 yet or not. Also I dont think customize exist for this higher firmware either. Most customizations now are done with winterboard.
No idea how I stumbled upon it, but I did find Customizer and was able to make new folders. Somehow I did lose 2/3 of the apps I had. Over time I'll just go back into my archives and re-install them. Miss the ability to have 5 apps across the bottom (springboard?). I keep seeing references to words I wish would be explained somewhere, ie: winterboard, summerboard, springboard, etc. At least my iPod is upgraded, still works but having Installer.app should really come back!
