Ipod touch 3g MC 4.0 downgrade problem

Hey guys. I'm new here and totally new to having a touch. I just bought it last week it had 3.1.3 installed out of the box and stupid me before reading anything installs 4.0 thinking it'd be great. Well it sucks and I tried everything to downgrade and jailbreak it. And every tutorial I find has pictures from a mac and I have a pc so I have no idea what's going on. I tried modifying the host file but i keep getting an error message
"Cannot create the CWindows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file. Make sure the path and the file name are correct." Can you guys please help me this is stressing me out to the max

Did you have the shsh files on hand for the iPod Touch? If you don't, there's no sense in trying to downgrade

no i don't have anything on file from a previous jailbreak (correct me if i'm wrong this is what the shsh files mean? from searching i believe i'm pretty much f*ck*d until a 4.0 jailbreak comes out
