Question iPod Touch 2G Crash - Can't restore... Tried a lot...

    Hello everyone,

my friend's iPod Touch 2G kinda died at christmas (exactly one day after the warranty expired). It was jailbroken on 3.1.2 (via Pwnage Tool 3.1.4). While playing a game it just crashed and went blackscreen. Since then the iPod boots up in Recovery Mode.

So what did we try so far:

Well, first of all we tried to recovery it about more than 50 times (both normal recovery and DFU mode, with all compatible firmwares (jailbroken and normal)). But either iTunes showed an error (6,9,20,21,1600) or the iPod froze in the process while iTunes was in "Preparing iPod Software for Restore" and the iPod was showing the Applelogo and a full bar (on 2.1.1 it freezes on "Waiting for iPod"). We tried this on WinXP, Win7 and my Mac (MacOSX 10.6.2) with different iTunes versions.

Also we tried to rewrite and upload files with iRecovery or just boot it up with it. Didn't help at all. But iRecovery gave us a little hint that it is maybe a hardware problem, because it gave, while trying to rewrite bigger system files, some Read/Write Errors.

Next tries involved tethered jailbreaking tools like older versions of RedSn0w. With these it was possible to get any firmware recovery over the "Waiting for iPod"-Step but not further. An attempt to jailbreak it again via RedSn0w or BlackRa1n didn't help either.

I read in other threads that we should keep on trying restore while switching ports and firmware versions and machines. But as we tried it with a lot of different setups and versions we are a little bit tired.

But maybe anyone has another idea how to get the iPod back to life or knows how to be sure that it is a hardware problem (maybe a diagnostic tool or something like that).

Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the answer. We started at the end of december than we had enough and both thought "Rest in peace iPod" but I don't know I just got new motivation to bring the Touch back to life. I am always restoring it while doing other things without any results so far.

Maybe the iRecovery message gives some more information:

    #iRecovery -s

But it doesn't go further to any prompt or something. There must be something wrong... But I don't know what. What really worries me here btw is not the NAND error it's more the "Panic Fail Count:15" as the other thing is something known as mentioned on http://www.saurik.com/id/12 nearly at the end.

Well it's possible to do "reboot" but "printenv" or "setenv" doesn't do anything. It seems that it is possible to upload files but as mentioned in the first post, at some point there are some read/write errors. Any ideas? I would like to wipe the iPod but didn't find a solution for that via Google.

And I really did a lot of research...

What do you mean with "Hard Restore" ? Sounds good :-) I did read a lot at the support sites on apple.com but so far nothing really helped.

    Ok i just found this

    Try a soft reset first:

    1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of the unit until a red slider appears

    2. Drag the slider.

    3. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

If a soft reset doesn’t work, try a hard reset:

Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for about ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

umm i cant remember what i did but it deleted everything off my ipod touch and Reset it completly to like it was brand new

The iPod doesn't even come to the normal OS, then I connect the iPod to an USB-Port it goes straight to Recovery Mode, when I start without a connection too, and well in DFU mode it is in DFU mode. But further than that I did not come so far, except a litte with redsn0w (an early version) to execute iBSS files and stuff. But still the iPod freezes when the bar is full under the Apple logo, as mentioned above.

    Little update:

I can access the iPod via iRecovery if I load up a .dfu file via RedSn0w.
Maybe there is something more possible than just loading up some files and setting the boot options.

Isn't it possible to load the whole firmware into memory without iTunes? It seems all a little bit strange if you ask me. And why is there no option to completely erase everything on this device by a console on a PC or just really access everything. Apple is a little bit too restrictive if you ask me. But I guess if Apple products would be open-source there wouldn't be the hypes they love

    Hmmmm.

    You have a good point

i have complete access to my ipod

i have a jailbroken ipod touch and i can "ssh" into my ipod with is full access

but i think apple does not let people full access because if you were to delete "every thing" thair would be no programing on it and it would Be completely usless and apple would basically be making a flash drive

SSH works fine if the iPod/iPhone boots up, but I didn't found a solution to access the iPod while in DFU or Recovery-Mode? Any further ideas?
