Help Please

I need help. I have a iPod Touch 2g 2.2.1 never jailbroken or updated or any other type of mod. Now i want to upgrade it to the lastest firmware and then jailbreak it. I've searched through various sites and forums on how to upgrade but what i've found i do not like. I heard if i upgrade to 3.1.2 i lose all my music and other stuff. I would like to update and jailbreak my touch without losing any music or app or anything. PLease can anyone help me? PLease step by step instruction and links and tutorials would be great. thanks a lot.

You cannot upgrade without having to put your music and whatnot back onto your device. It's just a simple sync back to your device once you've upgraded. As for jailbreaking, use Blackra1n if you're going to 3.1.2. Here's a guide to help you (it says iPhone, but with blackra1n, the iPod Touch will work with the software). Just be sure you have the correct firmware.
