Have you upgraded the iPod to 2.2? In order to even get the apps onto your iPod, it has to be at firmware 2.0 or greater.

Just click 'Upgrade' in iTunes and it should download the latest firmware and install it automatically. If you have firmware already, just shift (Win) or option (Mac) + click either 'Upgrade' or 'Restore' and then select the firmware proper.

Are you sure it is compatible with your device (as in the generation)? If you device is first generation, the firmware name must start with 'iPod1,2._'. If you device is second generation, the firmware name must start with 'iPod2,2._'. You cannot use first generation firmware on a second generation iPod, or vice-versa.

^yes i am using 1g and tried many firmware downloaded from different locations, even tried "2,2._" but the same error message appears, the reason is i am a new user of Ipod touch and applications tab in my ipod is not appearing on iTunes.

That error means that there is something wrong with the firmware and your device, so be sure it's for your device. If you want to be absolutely sure that the firmware is correct for the device and uncorrupted, download the firmware from Apple.
