iTunes, Firmaware upgrade, Jailbreak... without loosing ipod contents?

Hi,

i have an iPod Touch fw:2.0.2 (jailbroken) and have to update to fw:2.1 or 2.2, because of a new app

the problems are:

1. iTunes says it cannot read the contents of the iPod
2. i do not want to loose all software (i have tons of apps from Cydia and mp3's,avi's ..
3. it would be great not to lose the jailbeak too :-)

so how to upgrade this thing now?

If i copy some folders from the iPod on my Computer and after the upgrade, copy them back, will the apps work? if yes, which folders?

If i loose the jailbreak, which software should i use to jailbreak the iPod again?

EDIT:
...is there a way to upgrade the iPod without iTunes, only by copying/repalcing files via WinSCP or Total Commander?

Thanks,
Stolat

1. You can copy files from the iPod to your computer, mostly bookmarks/apps. You need only worry about apps & other things that aren't backed up by iTunes.
2. There is an app called 'AppBackup' (something similar, by BigBoss if I remember correctly) that will create a file listing all Cydia apps you have that will survive re-jailbreaks/restores/upgrades (provided you back up your entire device beforehand).
3. Upgrading/restoring your device wipes everything, but everything used by iTunes (your music, that's been placed in the iTunes music folder, AppStore apps, videos and photos, in the proper place).

There isn't a way to change FW without loosing the jailbreak status (there is something to make the device appear to be on a different FW, but it doesn't change it). As far as I know, you need iTunes to upgrade (unless there's a way with Terminal/CMD, but that'll be a doosey to try and do). As you're little thing in the corner says you use XP, WinPwn or QuickPwn to re-jailbreak. It really looks like you'll have to upgrade/restore due to the problem with iTunes.

If you have any more questions, please ask.

I posted this in another itouch thread but I have purchased a new itouch for my son and I told him that I would jailbreak his touch for him so that he could get the games like I have on my phone. It has 2.1.1 on it now my question is do I update to 2.2 then jailbreak or just jailbreak it and not update it until later when the reviews are out on 2.2 to see if it is worth it.

Happy Holidays

I just upgraded from 1.1.4 to 2.2 from iTunes Store. Tried to jailbreak but to no avail. My problem is I can't open Youtube and iTunes in my Ipod touch 1G after the FW upgrade. Tried winpwn but the .ipsw file is different and can't be 'hashed'. What seemed to be the problem? Any help on this/

Thank you.

Ed

You need to do a fresh restore to firmware 2.2 and then use Quickpwn 2.2 to jailbreak. Be sure to set up the phone as NEW in iTunes.. not from backup... this will fix all your issues.
