Default God help me, Vista SUCKS for jailbreaking . . .

I'm having the absolute WORST luck at jailbreaking my newly obtained 2.0 and 2.0.2 firmwares.

Ok. So I downloaded and installed the latest update for winpwn (2.5) never having installed a different version before. And I tried using it to pwn a 2.0 firmware. It made it through the custom firmware creation process, saving it to my documents. And then it pops into the instructions for entering DFU mode. This completes successfully, telling me my ipod is now ready to be pwned so I can add my custom firmware. Then, just as it goes into the step where I assume it is supposed to actually pwn the damn thing, winpwn crashes in Vista. I tried the same thing with the 2.0.2 firmware, and created another custom firmware, but the pwning of my actual ipod failed in the exact same way.

So now, I'm stuck with and iPod in recovery mode. I tried manually restoring my firmware (to the custom versions I just created) through the latest version of iTunes, using the Shift+click method. It failed me with the infuriating excuse: "The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. (1604)." So now, I sit impatiently waiting for iTunes to finish downloading the new 2.1 firmware so, at the very least, I can have the app store and a working iPod.

While I was waiting (as I am still) for the new firmware to finish downloading, I thought back to a more successful attempt I had had on my old XP system with the program Ziphone. I went to the site where I proceeded to download the newest version. As I am extracting it to my desktop, a message comes up to the effect that, if the Ziphone crashes immediately on startup, I need to install the Microsoft .NET framework 2.0. And, predictably, the program crashes immediately on startup. But here's the catch: VISTA COMES WITH 2.0 ALREADY INSTALLED! Well, what the hell am I supposed to do now?! Vista has proven once again to fail miserably at everything I once held dear to XP! And I have no idea where to go or what to do now, because I can't find anyone else with the same problem.

I have tried running all programs in both administrator mode and regular. I have "unblocked" all programs that "came from another computer," according to Vista. I am (was) on firmware 1.1.4 jailbroken, but never before pwned. And I am frustrated/exasperated/pissed off as hell. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I HATE VISTA!

its not even vista dude. i had the same problem with XP. ziphone uses a totally different method of jailbreaking as well so dont compare to that. have you tried using quickpwn? that is the number one program used to do this now. maybe you should try that. and the only reason people think vista sucks is because they dont know how to use it. its just different...not stupid

Regardless of whether or not Vista is the problem, I still can't get anything to work. And as far as quickpwn goes, I was under the impression that it was the same thing as winpwn, only watered down for those less tech-savvy. Do they not use almost identical methods for jailbreaking? If you really think that will help, I'd be willing to give it a shot, but not until I get other suggestions from people who have successfully resolved issues similar (if not the same) to mine.

Install Net Framework 3.0 or higher and use Quickpwn. I would restore to 2.1 and set up as a new ipod or phone, and then run quickpwn to j/b. I dont know if it will work with a ipod or not. iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your 2.1 3G iPhone Using QuickPwn (Windows)

Cool. So, the GUI was the problem. Winpwn and Ziphone apparently had issues with compatibility, but quickpwn worked just fine. Sorry for my bellyaching. I was just tired and annoyed.

PS: You will both be getting "Thank"ed for this.
