Downgrading 2.0 to JailBroken 1.1.4 Using PwnageTool for OS X

So, 2.0 is buggy on your iPod Touch, huh. Want to downgrade, without having to downgrade iTunes?

Requirements:

-iPod Touch with 2.0-2.0.2 firmware
-The iPod Touch 1.1.4 firmware: Get it off of RapidShare or a torrent because of the size limit MMiF lets you have.
-PwnageTool
-iTunes

First, download the latest version of PwnageTool. You can google this up and easily download. PwnageTool is a jail-breaker for iPhones, iPod Touches, and 3G's.

Open PwnageTool, and toggle "Expert Mode" at the top. Select iPod Touch.

PwnageTool will browse for .ipsw files in the Library folder. So give it some time to browse.
Once complete, create an .ipsw file for the firmware 1.1.4. You can do this by browsing in Finder to Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates. If you don't have the 1.1.4 firmware, you can download it in this thread.
If you are new to PwnageTool, follow the instructions in PwnageTool on how to create a jailbroken .ipsw file.

Now, it's been said that iTunes doesn't allow you to downgrade from an official to an official firmware. But you can downgrade from an official to a jailbroken firmware. Yes it is possible, and also works with jailbroken to jailbroken.

After you've created the 1.1.4 .ipsw restore with PwnageTool, it's time to open up iTunes. Don't forget to put your iPod in DFU mode, PwnageTool gives complete instructions on how to do this.

After putting your iPod in DFU mode, plug it in. iTunes will give you a notification that says something like "iTunes found a device in restore mode." Just hit OK.

Before pressing the Restore button, hit the Alt/Option key on your keyboard and hold it while pressing the Restore button. This will bring up a new window where you can select a firmware to restore to. You want to press the 1.1.4 firmware you just made.

And if all is well, you were able to downgrade 2.0 to 1.1.4. Congratulations!!!

If you have any questions, please email me @ devonedwards@mac.com or reply to this thread and I'll answer any questions you have.

Thanks,

Xander.

But, but, but.... I have a jailbroken 1.1.4 and was planning to leave it that way but (a) some friends have 2.0.2 and like it and (b) the Cydia home page now says that those guys recommend upgrading to 2.x.

Ironically; I came across your post above while looking for how-to's on upgrading a jailbroken 1.1.4.

So; please; is there a dinitive answer to "is 2.x buggy or not"?

Thanks very much.

the official 2.0 isn't buggy. the jailbreak 2.0 IS. Mainly because of the Beta Installer in 2.0 when you download something and go back to the home screen, it freezes. i had to reboot, and I couldn't get out of the boot logo for at least an hour. (I timed it) The Beta Installer freezes when I tried it with 2.0, 2.0.1, and 2.0.2.

But anyway, i Think you should upgrade to 2.0 anyway, just remove the Installer but keep Cydia if you are using WinPwn or PwnageTool. The upgrade is 10$ but I just downloaded the ipsw file as a torrent.

Hi i've tried to do this with pwnage tool 2.0.3 and i have downloaded the 1.1.4 firmware from several different places. The firmware 1.1.4 dosen't show even if i click expert mode, so i browse for it, select it and it comes up with "Wrong Firmware Bundle Selected." Do you know what the problem is?

Cheers

Yes Bliggy, There is a Way

Dauntless, I pressed forward. I tried to perform the same steps as indicated in this thread but found, alas and alack, that I wasn't able to replicate our Xander's success. I spent the better part of a day working out how to go about this, and using bits and pieces found here and elsewhere. The final solution is ridiculously easy imco. This is how I went about it:

You will need:
A WinXP(Fista?) Installation
iTunes 7.5 Setup.exe

Preparing and Finishing:

If you are like me and religiously update your software to avoid sec flaws and other hobgoblins you'll need to uninstall iTunes 7.7 and install iTunes 7.5. In my case I fully restarted XP between installation to ensure that all of the uninstalled libraries were absent from the system. After installing iTunes plug in your iPod and wait for the system to detect it.

If, like me, you were stuck at some firmware 2.x, iTunes might complain that it's an iPod it doesn't recognize and are you sure you've got the up to date software. Just click through the alert and click the restore button. As it's a fresh install it will download and install the 1.1.5 software on your iPod. Easy as that. From there you can downgrade to 1.1.4 and the world is your oyster or use Ziphone or Liberty+ to have at it directly.

This worked for me, your mileage may very. I find that with computing there is always at least 1 elegant solution. Simplify simplify!

Best,

crac

PS> I tried to submit my reply via my groovy new touch, but the formatting of this page is not iPod/iPhone friendly (go figure)

Hi Will.

I did have success with the 1.1.4 downgrade, however, I totally forgot to add to the thread that my version of PwnageTool was edited with a resource editor. Here's what you need to do:

Download a resource editor. I reccomend ResEdit or ResKnife. I use a registered version of Resorcerer, don't download Resorcerer because it doesnt let you save your data. try something free.

Open the editor, and show package contents of PwnageTool. Navigate to Info.plist, which should be in the root of PwnageTool, open the plist file with the editor.

This plist file does nothing but enables 1.1.4 bundles after editing.

After opening the plist file in the editor, 'Hex' the file. you will see a whole bunch on letters and numbers. We're gonna edit the Hex Data.

Scroll down to Offset B4. The Hex Data should say this: 093C 6B65 793E. In the second column, change 6B65 to 8B65. This will add the 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 bundle packs. Make sure you save the .plist!!

And if all is well, you HAZ SUCCESS!

''Hi and thanks for your write up instruction on how to downgrade!
However, pwnage tool 2.0 or above wont accept 1.1.4 ipsw. I have tried to use an earlier version of pwnage tool that does accept 1.1.4, but the resulting ipsw does not seem to work with either iTunes 7.7 or 7.5. Have you actually had success with your method? If so please let me know. I've been trying to get back to 1.1.4 really hard in order to be able to use the voip app with a microphone, and I just haven't had any success at all.
Thanks,
Will''
