So earlier today I was getting ready to make the jump to 2.0, I wrote down all the apps/skins I had, had already backed up all my music using CopyTrans, was good to go, but I had a nagging feeling that this iPod Touch hadn't been pwned, which (if I read correctly) it had to be if I was to update to 2.0. I had read a bit about how I was supposed to BootNeuter the Touch, but the more I read about it the more it seemed an iPhone only thing, and besides, whenever I tried to load BootNeuter the Touch would become unresponsive (forever, hours and hours, nothing changed.)
I've been running 1.1.4 jailbroken for a few weeks, and I thought I'd like to see some different boot logos before I update, so using Winpwn 1.0 RC3, I changed the logos, and everything seemed to be going great. Then something happened, and now I'm stuck in Recovery Mode. I've been stuck here for hours. And this isn't the nice, please plug cable into USB recovery mode, I mean it is blank screen. I can't see a thing.
I've been having problems getting Vista to recognize it, so I've been uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes several times, restarting the service, etc. At the moment, I can see there is an iPhone connected with iTunes, but it doesn't tell me serial or any other information, and of course it asks me to restore it. Which I've tried, several times. I tried a custom 2.0 restore image for a while, then I tried the stock 1.1.4 image which I downloaded from the downloads section of this site. Each time, it chugs along, but then reaches Error 1604, and crash, at which point the Touch is no longer recognized by Windows and I have to unplug and replug it.
So here are the things I can do: Hold Power button + Home button to restart, and enter recovery mode. Keep in mind that during all this time, nothing has been showing up on screen, except occasionally the screen will suddenly go white (THANK GOD THE SCREEN DIDNT DIE OR SOMETHING) but then back to black. If I had to guess, the boot image logos are corrupt and while I am at the recovery screen, I just can't see it.
So where should I go from here? I'll do anything not to brick this thing.
UPDATE: Funny stuff. Because iTunes detects the Touch as an iPhone right now (not a good sign :/), when I click the restore button and it tries to download an official firmware to restore to, it tries to download the 2.0 firmware, for free. It is an iPhone after all in Apple's eyes, right? Also, in case its necessary to know, I'm running Windows Vista x64, which makes me wonder whether or not I can attempt to downgrade to 1.1.4 (if thats really the problem) by switching to iTunes 7.5, which supposedly has problem working with x64. Halp. :<

What exactly is it doing? What error messages are you getting (if any)? The reason I ask is because when the iPod is put into recovery mode you will see it installing the Apple IBoot Recovery Driver and then iTunes gives you the message that you have to recover. I had that blank screen once and noticed that it was still in recovery mode and from there i loaded the new firmware.

I'm not getting any error messages. The iPod could very well be off if it weren't for the fact that using Winpwn (and hearing the USB device connect sound in Vista) I can check to see if the iPod Touch is on or not, Winpwn also telling me what mode its in. It seems like it is absolutely stuck in recovery mode. Occasionally Winpwn says that I made it into DFU mode, but then it leaves DFU and re-enters in recovery mode.
There are no graphics. There are no sounds. There is no backlight.
The only error messages I'm getting are from iTunes when I try to restore to ANY firmware, 1.1.4 or even 1.2 retail, not even hacked. Of course, its the mysterious 1604 error.
EDIT: So am I the second person or something to truly brick the iPod Touch? Thats pretty elite, isn't it?

One last thing that I can offer is have you tried using iLiberty or ZiPhone to try kicking it out of whatever mode that it is in? Make sure you do a clean system reboot and only have either iLiberty or ZiPhone applications open and try to get the iPod in DFU mode manually or at least somewhat detected by iTunes first then run ZiPhone or iLiberty. Maybe someone else can point out something that I may have missed or not tried yet
Yep, I tried using both ZiPhone and iLiberty early on in this whole debacle, and both seemed like they sent instructions to the iTouch, but it just fails to react or carry out the commands. It seems like it is very possibly to brick the iPod Touch by jailbreaking after all. If there are any other suggestions I'd love to hear them.
Also I have a similar problem, exactly the same as Ness's, but mine only shows up in itunes as a -3 itunes error, where it says that it found an ipod, but it cant be identified. So, I would restore if I could, but all it does is show the error. My guess is apple had some hidden anti-jailbreak measures, if there is at least 3 of us. help please?
I've been reading around different sites and this is the closest that I could find that best matches your situations. Try the method described in post number #92. I hope that helps.
I've been doing the kind of stuff post #92 has been suggesting since the beginning - the whole hold down power + home, then release, then restore and lol at Apple's amazing indestructibility. It doesn't work for me. When I do this, according to Winpwn, the iPod Touch is switching between modes and turning on/off (read earlier posts,) etc, but nothing shows up on the screen. No DFU mode, no recovery picture, nothing. When I go to restore it to ANY firmware, 1.1.4 retail or even 2.0 retail, it always extracts the software, then after a minute or so of "preparing" for recovery or restore or whatever, it gives me error 1604, and the iPod is the same as it was, except now I have to unplug and replug it back in for iTunes and Windows to detect it.
Ok guys i had the same thing but i made it out of it
This is how
My itouch was detected but gave me a 1605 error and said it was an ipod, but it doesnt know the ipod connected.
I know i was in DFU mode bcuz winpwn showed me (iphone enter DFU) (Iphone disconected DFU.
I downloaded zhipone 3.0
in ziphone choose the change phone mode to DFU (it said something about you will have to recover the phone via itunes)
Did the DFU mode on the itouch (just did the steps, nothing showed on the screen), tried like 3 times and then ziphone gave me a error and
Sudently itunes recognized it as a itouch and told me needed to restore.
My iPod Touch was in this "black screen" semi-DFU mode for 5 days.
I ran my query through a thread on another board. See here for the full thread.
I was getting Error 11 on Mac and Error -3 on Windows.
User on that thread mentioned a key combo that I have never heard of: Hold both buttons for 6 seconds, release both, and then push and release the top button.
I have no idea what this key combo does, and I have no idea if something else (I began with a completely dead battery, I used a Mac Mini that had never been upgraded to iTunes 7.7, etc.) was the real cause of the sudden ability of iTunes to restore (and I restored first to 1.1.1, then to 1.1.4 and then to 2.0).
Anyway, I point you to the other thread because I was a holder of a black-screened iPod Touch and I am now holding a fully functioning iPod Touch.
BTW, I could be wrong but I think that my black screen problem came from my installing 2.0 on a JB1.1.4 and then (stupidly) "restoring from backup" rather than "setting up as a new iPod". I will ALWAYS use the latter from now on.

Reason: spelling errors fixed
Wow! I'm sorry to hear this, I hope this works out for everyone and I'll follow this thread.
Shows me how lucky I was with both my iphone and ipod touch.
Got em both jailbreaked and customized, iphone got stuck in ziphone several times and froze, then tried iliberty+ and that worked. Loved that Kick out of....function in iliberty+.
And that's what I would have suggested, but since you tried all that already.....
I'm very surprised DFU Mode and restore doesn't get you anywhere....
What I might suggest though is, go to a friend and try all this again either on a Mac or at least on a Windows XP PC and I had a lot of luck with itunes 7.6.2.9
That's the last thing I can think of!
