When's the best time to upgrade?
I currently have an old 2g iPod touch and the more I research the more I realise that I will need to upgrade to a newer version eventually, so when would be the best time to do this? I don't have a job yet (I only just turned 16) so I need a time when it will be as cheap as possible!

I've always bought iPods and Macs with the three weeks rule. Apple releases a new iWhatever day 1, and I buy it on day 20-21, for example. Here's why:
Day 1: I'm not going to buy it because nobody, even Apple Store geniuses know about it
Day 7: there's usually a bug, but not always. Some blogs have made reviews of the thing.
Day 14: if there's a big bug, they had found it.
Day 21: bugs have usually been solved, and there are plenty of reviews all arround the Net. Then there are a lot of months until the next release and you can enjoy it as much as possible before Steve Jobs says it's an outdated model and it becames unsupported.
I always did it in any Apple product (iPod Shuffle 3G, iPod Touch 4G, etc). I didn't do it once, when Snow Leopard Mac OS X 10.6 appeared. I ordered it 30 minutes after it release, and I had it two days after that. I suffered a week of non-printer support (and here my father had to print his teacher things and papers for the new school year) and some apps which needed to be fixed.
Never again. Three-weeks rule forever!
I know it's only a personal opinion but I hope it helped you. Wait for the next iPod touch release if you can.

Hmmm.... let me think... maybe it's the camera on the back? Or maybe it's facetime, or maybe, JUST MAYBE, it's the Retina display! Or native wallpapers and multitasking? I own a kriffing iPod Touch 2nd Generation for goodness sake! I'm just one generation above PRIMITIVE!

Apple usually releases their new iPod Touch's around the end of August/beginning of September.
