Background Music...New?

A story at engadget regarding a rhapsody update referred to OS 4 finally allowing "background music", thus making some of the new features in the rhapsody update even more useful.

I new that 4.0 was supposed to introduce multi-tasking, but I didn't know music was considered a "task". U can already have "background music" while u use other apps, or is my ipt3 unusual?

I really doubt I have a unique device, do older gen itouch devices not allow this?
