Run Mail App In Background On Startup?

I have a question. I have a iPod Touch and on the iPhone when you get mail, it automatically pops up the number of emails that you currently have. Its like the mail app is running in the background, checking X amount of minutes for when to check for mail again.

Can you do this with the iPod Touch? If so how would I go about doing this?

Alright, the fix works. When I sent myself an email, it would automatically show how many emails I receieved without having to open the application. Thanks for the fix!
