A friend of mine asked me to look at his iPod. He told me he couldn't do anything with it, that it wouldn't turn on, he bought it like that. I tried to put it into restore mode and iTunes recognizes it but says that the firmware is not available. If I turn it on normal it comes up with a red screen with a fireball on it and says inferno. It has a bunch of lines of code and at the bottom corner it says FAILED Battery: -1 percent. Any ideas on how to get it to work again? Thanks

Go to apple.com and see if he still has the warranty if he does just replace it. That's what I did.

apple.com doesn't recognize the serial number

If you put it into DFU mode and it didn't work, you're doing it wrong. DFU mode always works, and it can never be edited or messed up by any software. Try DFU mode again and restore.

How can it not recognize it. What do you mean by this.
Can you post a pic of it.

apple tells me the serial number isn't recognized.
I tried restoring it 10 times and I know it was in DFU mode because the screen was black and itunes told me it needed to be restored but when I try to restore it itunes tells me there is no software available for it. It's an ipod touch but itunes thinks it's an iphone. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I tried manually downloading the latest firmware and restoring to that but even that didn't work it told me the firmware was wrong no matter what firmware I used.

If it looks like this, you are pretty much screwed. These are fakes. Supposedly they are prototype units, with magically missing firmware. I have seen a situation similar to this on eBay, where ipt2g units with working cameras were actioned. These also did not have apple firmwares on them, but Foxconn internal software. Sadly it looks like Inferno was a lockout mechanism in case the test hardware got in the wild. There is a video on YouTube showing this rather clearly. http://attwolfpack.net/blog/?p=480 Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But hey if your looking to get rid of it pm me
