Diagnostic Mode

In case you didn't know, you can put your clickwheel iPods into Diagnostic Mode, where you can perform a series of tests on your iPod to make sure it's running in tip top shape.

1. Shutdown you iPod buy holding down the Menu and Select Buttons.

2. With it shutdown, press and hold the Rewind and Menu Buttons until you are booted in diagnostic mode.

3. Now just move through the menus to select your tests, and to boot into Normal mode, just repeat step one and boot normally.

This doesn't work with 3rd Gen Nano. Tested on my sister's new iPod Nano few months back and was disappointed that now it doesn't exist! Maybe, there's some other way to get into diagnostics mode now...

i know it works with 3rd gen (non click wheel) ipods with the four buttons above the wheel.. It should work on the nano as well you must be hitting a wrong button or something... Are there any tests like this for the iphone or itouch?

to get diagnostic mode to work on the fatty, you need to do the following

1 - turn hold on, then off (the switch at the bottom)
2 - press and hold menu and select, until the screen goes blac
3 - as soon as the apple logo comes up, press the left track key |<< and select. you may need to hold for a second, but diag mode should come up pretty much instantly.

you need to press the last key combo right as the apple appears, or it won't work..not sure why, but that's what i found.

i did not discover this, just remember reading about it a while back, and figured i would share the info.
