Default Hacked iPod nano Now With Fewer Apps

The sixth generation iPod nano has been hacked by developer and hacker James Whelton. James was able to hack the nano by bypassing its cache comparison and installing a Springboard hack. For now, this only allows you to delete one of the pre-installed apps and create a blank spot. This may not seem like much, but it does demonstrate that the nano can be altered. James is quick to point out, however, that the nano has not been jailbroken, “I do not have root access over the device. I did not “install” an app. I figured out how to remove them and insert a blank space into the springboard.”

Mr. Whelton also found references to possible additions to the nano: “Next is the discovery in some of the device’s plists of reference to support of Movies, TV Shows, Apps, Games, vCards, Calendar events and so on, with a few other cool things like a passcode lock. With the bypass I figured out, I hope to enable these pretty soon. It seems like the OS is a rehashed version of the previous Nano’s OS.”

The iPod nano that James is currently working with just happens to be a pink 8 GB nano that he won. He started hacking it on a flight home after winning the device.

It’s doubtful that Apple will introduce apps for the iPod nano anytime soon, at least not until the annual September Event, at the very earliest. The sixth generation iPod nano now looks very much like a mini-iPhone. As the operating system continues to develop, it will be interesting to see if it does become an actual iOS device. You’ll need a magnifying glass, however, if you ever want to watch a movie on the tiny 1.54-inch screen. Imagine watching The Lord of the Rings on a nano.
