You do realize that the 3.5 mm jack and the 1/8 in jack are the same thing, right? they're not trying to make it smaller, they are trying to add more capabilities to the current size.

News flash. They already use this jack in the new iPods. If you look inside the headphone port you will notice the pogo pins. Compare it to an older ipod to see the diference. They are currently using this "new" port in the iPad, iPhone 4, the new shuffle, nano and touch. This isn't news really.

Why not remove cables all together, bluetooth syncing should have been built into iTunes a long time ago.

Totally disagree. I, for one, use my iPhone in my car to play music and I connect the charger to the bottom and the aux cable to the top.

Did you not notice that one of the pins could be used for "data transfer"?

But then you can't use the headphones while syncing or charging. It would be like the shuffle.

The 30-pin connector has separate pins for both power and audio which can be used at the same time, how do you think the iPod docks charge your iPhone while you play music?

Good point, I didn't even think about that, and now that you mention that it would be kind of annoying.

Lol, this revolutionary design, just make something that we actually want, we never wanted that tiny nano with touch screen it in itself doesn't make any since you can barely get 2 fingers even on it

Yeah but odly enough regular headphones DON'T HAVE A 30 pin connector on them if you did remove the headphone jack, plus not all stereos support the play from jack but all support audio cable in

Yes, but in theory the stereo audio pins would be in the same location so that it would be reverse compatible with most headphones. But on second thought, Apple doesn't always have the most foresight...

    *EDIT*
And they are just adding 3 more pins to the traditional 2 pin stereo audio jack, so it would still work with normal headphones.

    Well yes and no
I would guess that apple has 2 separate lines running through the cable, for moving stiff to the iPhone an the other for moving stuff off, but this could also be done with a multiplex data transfer cable(like networking cables) so it would only be one cable but a little slower connection
Also how would it transfer data to the computer if the 30pin is gone, if it works off the headphone jack then you cant plug headphones in while transferring so please explain
