iPod touch With Camera Turns Up in Vietnam
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSLqIkBv81s&feature=player_embedded]YouTube - Tinhte.vn - Trên tay iPod Touch có camera[/ame]
Tinh Tế is on a roll.
The Vietnamese website that in just the last couple of weeks has posted pictures and video of both a fourth-generation iPhone and a refreshed MacBook has yet another leak of a purported unreleased Apple device. This time, they got their hands on a camera-equipped iPod touch (Google Translate FAIL). It's not entirely clear yet whether this is a new prototype or a leftover from the rumored September 2009 run that was scrapped due to quality issues, but given Tinh Tế's recent string of successes, this deserves at least a second look.

The device that Tinh Tế got their hands on somehow (it's not explained in the article) has a DVT-1 (Design Verification Test - 1) designation on the silkscreened label, marking it as a final-stage prototype. There's a paper sticker on the back that describes the camera as an Omnivision part OV2665-6s, a 2-megapixel self-illuminated sensor made by the same company that provides the iPhone 3GS camera. The iPod has "64GB" labeling, indicating that it's carrying two 32GB Samsung NAND flash memory chips, and is running Apple's suite of firmware test tools.

The serial number is inside the range known for the current iPod touch line, and the possibility exists that this isn't a new product at all, but rather a design prototype for the third-generation device released last year. Reports at the time indicated that a camera had been planned for the iPod touch refresh, but was removed right before final production began because of hardware problems . Steve Jobs has maintained that the iPod touch is too thin to fit a camera, but teardowns have revealed a camera-sized empty space in the chassis. Purported iPod touch prototypes with cameras appeared on eBay last month before being suddenly withdrawn. Those had DVT-1 and DVT-2 tags, and both were 32GB devices rather than 64GB.
It's possible that these are, in fact, devices Apple will bring to market. However, the usual schedule is for the manufacturer to release new iPhones in June/July, and new iPods in September. So if this thing is actually coming to an Apple Store near you, it may not drop soon.

If this leak is genuine, hopefully that would force Apple to realise the futility of carrying on with their tradition of secrecy...

In before the "z0mg this is teh fake china".
Anyone doubting the legibility of this is stupid. This is clearly a prototype of an unreleased ipod touch. The finishing and everything is perfect. The UI is another proof. The fourth generation iPhone they showed was real too.I'm MYAATT DAAAMOOON!!!

Was it ever made clear why Apple totally dropped the ball with the last iPod Touch by not including a camera? What the heck were they thinking?

Pretty awesome.
I think I could read googles translations all day. Pretty damn funny.
Hope that little real meal, then ask what do you all play by inserting the camera into the hole puncher ........ hix!

I dont think there really is a need for a camera on the ipod. It would be a nice feature but not worth the additional money. Thats why I think the Jobs didn't think it was worth it. If it does come out sometime over the summer then its bc cameras and the sensors have gotten so cheap that its viable.
On another note - is that prototype software still part of the apple current ipod/iphone subsystem? like a test boot screen to see if all parts are functional as in say the dell diagnostics mode?
and lastly.... whats up with the cheerios box for the serial number??? copyright issue or does apple own cheerios too

They must be using their expert guerilla tactics to get into foxconn and steal highly classified material.
