redsn0w, the long awaited iPod Touch 2G jailbreak, was announced a couple weeks ago, and released Saturday. The Dev Team folks bill it as "a no frills tethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 2G." The tool is a 16kb download here or here.

They also warn they will be providing no support whatsoever for this program, and will go so far as to ban your user ID from their blog if you post comments asking for support - its a slightly more complex process, and they don't want folks using it who don't know what they're doing. And I'm sure it makes perfect sense that as busy as these guys are, they don't have time to walk folks individually through the process the hundreds of thousands of times that will naturally wind up happening.
These guys have their hands full enough as it is with the iPhone side of things.
iPod Touch 2g 2.2.1 Firmware Download
They've laid out basic instructions on the site. We'll be writing up a full guide with screenshots, etc, sometime today or tomorrow. Until then, check out their README, and here's the gist:
Thanks, Dev Team.-------------------------------------------------------------------
Basic instructions
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: these are the bare bones instructions. Please don't come to us
looking for more detailed instructions.
Preparation
1) Copy the FirmwareBundles and CustomPackages directories into
your PwnageTool.app/Contents/Resources directory
2) Create a custom 2.2.1 ipsw with PwnageTool in Advanced mode. Don't
enable custom boot logos.
3) From your custom 2.2.1 ipsw, extract these (patched) files:
iBSS.n72ap.RELEASE.dfu (name it iBSS221pwn.dfu)
iBoot.n72ap.RELEASE.img3 (name it iBoot221pwn.img3)
4) From the official 2.1.1 ipsw, extract this (unpatched) file:
iBSS.n72ap.RELEASE.dfu (name it iBSS211.dfu)
Installing the jailbroken custom ipsw
5) Put your ipt2g into DFU mode using keypresses. Don't have iTunes running!
6) Start rslite. Send the official iBSS from 2.1.1: !iBSS211.dfu
7) Start rslite again. Send the redsn0w-lite patch: #pwn211ibss.txt
8) Send the patched iBSS from 2.2.1: !iBSS221pwn.dfu
9) Use iTunes to do a full restore using your custom 2.2.1 ipsw
Tethered boot
After the install, your ipt2g will not be bootable without assistance
from a tethered computer. The method in this README.txt requires you
to go into DFU mode, but you should be able to find (or work out on
your own) other more convenient ways.
10) Repeat steps 5-8
11) Send the patched iBoot from 2.2.1: !iBoot221pwn.img3
Your homescreen should soon show up. You can then start iTunes.

Looks complicated...

I must say, impressed as I am that it's been achieved, I can't help but feel it's a little bit pointless if you gotta take your pc with you to turn your iPod on...
Good start though, I just hope some more progress is made.

Yer can't really see this being a big hit with users, as people won't want to have to use a computer to turn there ipod every time. Hopefully this will be improved by the dev team in time.

Awesome work guys!
But I think I'll pass. Way too complicated to set up. Plus if I wanted to bring my computer with me wherever I go, I wouldn't have bought an iPod touch for my music.....

I think it's great that the Dev Team released an early version for people that can't wait to get their 2G iPod Touch jailbroken. Now not everyone has to wait for a QuickPwn or something like that that has 2G iPod Touch jailbreaking abilities. They can just do it manually. And for everyone else: it will probably be just a week or so before the Dev Team comes out with a new QuickPwn

This is nothing compared to how we use to unlock and jailbreak our first generation iphones when they first came out. This is a piece of cake compared to that.

Go into your applications folder... find pwnage and "right" (or two finger click on a laptop) click on it and select "show package conents".
It's not complicated at all actually... everything is extremely straight forward and explained step by step... just because it's not a program that does EVERYTHING for you doesn't mean it's not usable.Last edited by Poseidon79; 01-31-2009 at 03:21 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

some people simply know squat about computers even though this may seem simple to people like us it may seem impossible to someone else as soon as i get my hands on a touch to play with ( monday probably ) i will make a video tutorial for the less competent. lol^^^Why???.....Because you have to do a little work yourself...and have some good computing skills....

I don't understand what the big deal is. How often do you people reboot your device?? I do MAYBE every other week. I don't have to, I just think it gets a little bogged down after some time. But that's with my iPhone not an iPod. Why would u turn it off????
And the vid tutorial I saw last week shows you clicking one button on a reboot. Is that too much 4 u people?
If it is, DONT USE IT!!!
AND, don't wine! Be happy someone (NOT YOU) came up with a jailbreak method.
Congrats to all those who r going to jailbreak, ITS TOTALLY WORTH IT
BULLOCKS to those of u who r complaining.8Gig > 1.0 FW (dead spot on screen)
8Gig > 1.0.2 FW (broken vibrate after a while)
8Gig > 1.1.2>1.1.4>2.0>2.1>2.2(Jonny5 Still alive)
