ipod nano 2g charger

my friend gave me his 2nd gen ipod nano to put music in it. I used my iphone cable to put music into it, but it doesn't seem to charge it... it turns off as soon as i disconnect it. is it the battery of the ipod nano, or is it because the cable is not compatible?
