I have an iPod Video 30GB 5.5g. Because I am a silly nerd who likes to tinker around with stuff, I got the idea to buy a $9 32GB Class 4 SD card and convert my iPod to solid-state using an SD to ZIF adapter. I talked myself out of it, since I'm sure Class 4 is way slower than the Toshiba MK3008GAL 30GB IDE drive that is already in it, and there is nothing at all wrong with my iPod as it is.
However, that did get me wondering. Anyone know the actual read/write transfer rates of the Toshiba MK3008GAL? Any known benchmarks? Could there be a bottleneck elsewhere that would make a 32GB Class 4 SD card actually seem to be the same? Or if there is ever a deal on a Class 10 card, would that be equal to the HDD?
No, there would be no purpose to this project except for nerdy fun times. That, and I could maybe even make a little profit selling the old HDD.
