That trick works on a 2g (which has 4 pins in the headphone jack)
but not on a 1g.
Ugh.
Nothing from Apple.
There are a few 3rd party mics that work, but all are long out of production, and impossible to find.
The most popular one was the Macally iVoice Pro (possibly Macally iVoice III).
However, you might just want to get a newer iPod, or something else.
Most apps won't work at all, because they require a newer device, or don't recognize the mic.
Only a few very very old apps, and the built in Voice Recorder App will actually record.
What did you want to use it for?

If there are no built-in microphone accessories for the first gen iPod, how about for the 4g iPod? or even built-in camera?
mod edit; link removed.

Switcheasy.com has a product called thumbtack which is a microphone for iPods. I used it on my older iPod for VOIP calls and it worked great
