Default Apple's 5.5-Inch Next-Gen iPhone Reportedly Facing Production Issues

Apple’s rumored 5.5-inch “phablet” iPhone model is said to be facing issues with its new in-cell touchscreen panel as well as color unevenness on the next-gen iPhone metal casing, which could delay the device’s launch back to next year, leaving the smaller 4.70inch model to debut alone this year according to KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo.

According to Kuo, the Cupertino California company is already facing production bottlenecks on the 4.7-inch model related to the new technology for the device’s in-cell touch panel, as well as color unevenness on the redesigned “iPhone 6” metal casing. These problems are said to be even worse with the larger 5.5-inch model. Kuo said the following regarding the matter:

These problems will likely be even more complicated with a larger size.
Kuo believes the new in-cell touch panels may have issues related to touch sensitivity on the edges of the panel as displays become larger in size, making the 5.5-inch model a much greater technical achievement for Apple to accomplish. In addition, Kuo stated he didn’t expect that a new scratch-resistant 5.5-inch sapphire front panel will “easily pass the drop test near term.” The technical issue could also prompt delays according to him.

The “most conservative scenario” is that Apple delays the 5.5-inch “iPhone 6” model to 2015. In this situation, he expects a larger 4.7-inch model along with more affordable iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C models will spur Apple to sales growth in the holiday quarter, meaning a later-than-expected launch for the rumored product wouldn’t have much of an effect on the company’s bottom line. The analyst did hold out some hope that the 5.5-inch “iPhone 6” could launch in 2014 but even if that happens, it’s likely to occur after mid-fourth quarter, which would mean after the middle of November, a much later timeframe than Apple has launched new iPhone models in recent years.

Kuo also issued a note recently where he revealed that he has been told the anticipated wrist-worn device is facing mass production delays. As a result, he believes that it may not go on sale to the public until as late as December of this year. The insider also expects that Apple will debut a new Apple TV set-top box this fall with motion controls and potentially support for a third-party App Store. He expects that a revamped Apple TV will play a “key role” in Apple’s connected ecosystem going forward.

As usual, this is all speculation and we’ll have to wait and see what turns out to be true.

Companies have been making larger touch screens for years now.. I'm sure there's nothing technical about it that hasn't been done before. I don't see how this could cause issues.

I'm willing to put money on it. Every year...production issues which result in shortages so iPhones all over the world will magically sell out on day 1. This is all done on purpose.

Last week I was scrolling through yahoo's home page and there were literally 4 different articles about the sapphire glass. I kid you not, article 1 said they had more than enough, article 2 contradicted that and said they were short, the third said that Apple has enough for ALL of their devices and iWatches, and the 4th said that the iWatch could face sapphire glass problems - they were spaced every other link as you scrolled down. This isn't news, these are bored "reporters" writing padded articles so that yahoo and other sites will get the clicks they need to see for their own metrics.

I agree news nowadays isn't creditable like in the old days. Rumors, hearsay, and speculation is all you need now to make a buck. Just like patents, just because you scribbled on napkin, you can patent it. You use to have to actually have a physical prototype or example to file a patent.

I knew they'd never release two different models in 1 year. And don't say 5C/5S.. The 5C was just a repackaged 5.

I knew the 5.5 would never happen.

I hope they come out with a new, weird and limited color (molten, golden lava or something) to make tons of money again as with the "gold iPhone"

I'm still hoping, fingers crossed. The 5.5 is the one I really want, but planned on buying both. Oh well, still all just rumors. Ya never know.
