Default Apple Sells 500 Millionth iPhone

It has been noted in Apple’s quarterly earnings reports that over the years, they have sold 472 million iPhones between the launch in 2007 and the end of 2013. Analysts have estimated that more than 38 million units have been sold for the current quarter, which will be ending in a few days. However, the company has already sold its 500 millionth iPhone and Forbes has reported that it is a milestone, which has passed without even a mention from Apple.

    According to Forbes:

The consensus would have placed the milestone sale around March 8 given that entering the quarter Apple had sold 472 million iPhones. So even if it proves a bit high as it did last quarter, we’ve crossed the point where it’s safe to assume that Apple has sold 500 million smartphones in less than 7 years. And the most recent 100 million took somewhere between 2-6 weeks less than the previous 100 million did.
The company is usually known for celebrating notable milestones- a few examples include changing the homepage during the 30th anniversary of the Mac and having a countdown on the website for the milestone of the Apple App Store. When Apple reached the download for the 50 billionth app in May 2013, the company awarded the person who downloaded the 50 billionth app a $10,000 iTunes Store gift card.

Although Apple did not publicize the 500-million iPhone milestone, quarterly iPhone sales consistently increase on a year-to-year basis. The company has a selling record of 51 million iPhones in fiscal Q1 2014, which has increased from 47.8 million during the same time frame last year. However, there may be a decrease in iPhone sales in the next few quarters as Apple is preparing to launch its dubbed iPhone 6 in the fall. Hopefully, it will grab enough attention from consumers with the rumored larger display so that enough users will upgrade in 2014 and help increase sales later in the year.
