'Safari Downloader+' Adds File Downloading and YouTube Video Downloading to Safari
Many of you might remember the popular Chrome Downloader Plus tweak by iOS developer Jalal Ouraigua that brought file downloading capabilities to the popular Google Chrome Web browser. If you liked it, but prefer Mobile Safari over Google Chrome for iOS, then you'll be happy to learn about a new jailbreak tweak called Safari Downloader+ by the same developer.
Ouraigua notes that this is a port of the Google Chrome downloader to Mobile Safari, and it's compatible with both iOS 6 and iOS 7 devices, iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads, whether they're 32-bit or 64-bit.
When you open Mobile Safari after downloading this tweak, you will find a new blue downloads tab at the bottom of the Web browser, right beside the new tab button. When you visit a Web site, and tap on a download button, as shown above, a download manager will open up, showing you details about the file that you're about to download. You can check change the destination of the downloaded file, and then download or view the file. The download manager shows you the progress of the download in real time with an iOS 7-style download ring and download speed information.
Once downloaded, you can tap on the file in your download manager, shown above, and you'll get the iOS 7-style share sheet. AirDrop is included here, as well as a preview feature (for supported file types), a clear only feature (for removing the file from the download manager, but not deleting it), a delete from disk feature (for deleting the file), and an open in feature for opening the file in various kinds of applications (such as Dropbox).
In addition to miscellaneous files on the Web, Safari Downloader+ also supports downloading YouTube videos. You can visit the mobile YouTube site via Mobile Safari, and then load a video, and you'll get the prompt below:
This button can be moved around for your convenience by tapping and dragging, and if you want to download a YouTube video, then double-tap on the button to get the quality selector shown below:
Tap on a quality that you want to download the video in, and then you will be brought to the confirmation screen, where you will see the video that you're about to download. Here, you can choose the destination of the download, and then choose to download or to view the file. While downloading, you will once again see your progress in real time with an iOS 7-style progress ring, and download speed.
Once downloaded, you can tap on the "i" button to bring up the iOS 7-style sharing sheet, which allows you to use AirDrop, open the video in other applications, save the video, import the audio from the video to your music application, import the entire video to your videos application, or delete the video from your disk.
Safari Downloader+ also adds a preferences pane to the Settings application where you can configure a few options:
You can enable or disable downloading YouTube videos, enable or disable downloading miscellaneous files from the Web, enable or disable the desktop user agent, enable or disable automatically detecting MIME types, choose to remember or forget the position of the black button on YouTube, enable or disable downloading certain file types, and choose the maximum number of simultaneous downloads.
Safari Downloader+ is packed with features, and it's very easy to use. If you want to start downloading files on your iOS 6 or iOS 7 device, then we can certainly recommend it. It's available for $3.50 in Cydia's BigBoss repository right now.
