Default Sales of New iPhones Surging in China

China Mobile, the nation's and world's largest mobile operator, hasn't yet launched the new iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s, but already we're seeing a significant spike in sales of Apple's current generation smartphones across mainland China.

Data straight out of China and compiled by Counterpoint Research indicates that Apple has quadrupled its share in the Chinese market as of the end of October.

Sales were so strong, in fact, that they propelled the iPhone from 6th place to 3rd place inside China almost overnight.

“Although the iPhone 5s didn’t attract long queues outside Apple retails stores as the iPhone 4S did a couple of years ago it definitely was more successful compared to what the iPhone 5 registered in terms of overall sales in a month," says Counterpoint’s Tom Kang. "Also, with a China Mobile deal on the horizon, Apple iPhone 5s at all three carriers will for sure ignite a ‘price war’ boosting the overall iPhone 5s sales in China. This might allow Apple to even reach the No. 1 smartphone player in December or January in China.”

What was true for Apple in China, however, was also true in a number of other countries. “Apple’s iPhone 5s helped Apple surpass Samsung in the US as well as maintain its leadership position in the Japanese smartphone market during October,” adds Counterpoint’s Neil Shah.
