Default BBM Boasts Over 20 Million New Active Users in its First Week

After a troubled rollout for BlackBerry’s BBM messaging app for iOS, coupled with its recent business issues, many were reluctant about the success of the company’s future. Ultimately, the only opinion that matters though is that of its customer base and in this case, it appears to be happy and growing. Since the rollout of the BBM for iOS and Android, BlackBerry has seemingly gained 20 million active users for a total of 80 million users. Andrew Bocking EVP of BBM had the following to say regarding the matter:

It is great to see so many people downloading BBM, but the true measurement for us is engagement – the connections being made and the conversations in which our BBM community engages.
The company is pointing toward the active user numbers as a point of pride. Bocking continued his thoughts on the matter by discussing the difference between bragging about downloads and bragging about active users:

The power of BBM has always been the active, real conversations and interaction that our customers enjoy. From here on out, we will focus on active users of BBM and will no longer focus on simple download numbers."
The company plans to add new features to the BBM app in the upcoming months including video calling, voice calls and a new social community service for connecting with other BBM users. We’ll have to wait and see if the company can continue to stand out from its competition though by being patient.

Yep, people are losers because of the type of phone they use.

That's an impressive 33% increase of their userbase in 1 week. Too bad they couldn't figure out how to increase phone sales like that.

No, BB fanboys are way more annoying than Apple fanboys.

The reports are actually confusing. They say 20mil downloads between iOS and and android and that the now have 80mil active users. That doesn't mention how many of those 20mil downloads make up part of the 80mil active users. They could have started with 70mil active users and only half of the 20mil downloads are part of that active users number.

iH85...; it doesn't require GPS, I turn that feature off on my phone... As for it being another messenger app... At least it's free and not just for a year or so, like others that after a given amount of time (1 year) you have to pay to continue using it...

80mil have it - 20mil only active. So 60mil either don't use it or deleted it. What's so hard to understand?
