Default 'Verbal' Will Announce Your Notifications Out Loud

Great for those that can’t see well, or for those that just want the luxury of being able to hear their notifications spoken to them from their pocket, a new free jailbreak tweak dubbed Verbal by iOS developer Vatsal Manot will announce your notifications out loud so that you can hear them.

Very simply put, when you receive a notification, the tweak will let you know verbally. For example, if you get a “Hello” message from John Adams, You will hear your device speak to you saying, “John Adams... [insert emphatic pause here]... Hello.”

Verbal is also customizable on a per-application basis, which means that you can choose the applications that speak to you, and you can even choose deeper settings for each application, such as custom volumes for each application, custom speaking rates for each application, and custom languages for each application.

All of the tweak's options can be configured from the preferences pane in the Settings application:

When you tap on either the Volume, Rate, or Language cells, you will see a list of applications that you can tap on to configure their individual options. You can set the volume from anywhere between 0.01 and 1.0, the rate from anywhere between 0.01 and 1.0, and for languages, you can pick pretty much any language that the device supports (English by default).

You can also choose whether or not the tweak will obey the mute switch (if not, even when you're muted your notifications will announce out loud), and you can choose to disable sounds in any application that you want so that all you hear when you get a notification is the voice speaking out to you and not a sound alert.

From what we can see, Verbal is a solid solution for people that only want to core functionality of having their notifications read aloud to them. For those looking for additional options and additional support, there are a number of paid jailbreak tweaks that do just that, such as Aloud or SpeakEvents. Verbal is completely free, so we have a feeling that some people will warm up to it rather quickly.

If you would like to give the tweak a shot, it's available in Cydia's BigBoss repository.

When the jailbreak comes out for iOS 7 and the 5s might give it a try.

From what I understand they're not all exactly the same and some you have to pay for and some you don't. I don't see why anyone would be against variety or even competition of a free market enterprise.
