Default iOS Hacker Winocm Has a Binary That Can Untether an iOS 6.1.3 Jailbreak, But Needs Work

On Friday morning, iOS hacker winocm announced via his Twitter account that he has a binary that can untether a tethered jailbreak for older devices running iOS 6.1.3.

The tethered jailbreak is only for devices that are susceptible to the limera1n exploit, like the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G, and so on. Tethered means that you need to connect your device to a computer and run the boot up utility in the jailbreak tool to reboot the device, while with an untethered jailbreak, you can reboot your jailbroken device freely without having to connect to a computer.

Since the binary is intended for untethering an existing tethered jailbreak, the binary would only work for the listed devices, and not newer ones like the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPod touch 5G, and so on. Winocm lets us know that his untether is working on his iPhone 4, but still needs a lot of work.

Notably, the hacker also says that the binary is useless for iOS 7. Specifically, this binary is only for iOS 6.1.3 and no other firmware version. iOS 6.0 through iOS 6.1.2 can be jailbroken untethered already with the evasi0n jailbreak tool.

Winocm has no information regarding any kind of release at this point in time, as the binary still needs work. But nonetheless, it's neat to see that some progress is being made and is surely great news for some of those running iOS 6.1.3 at this time.

That's cool to know that someone still cares for not only older device owners but people who are stuck at 6.1.3 because of say a bug. Or for people who want to update but just not to 7.

Well seeing as how the iPod touch 4Th gen doesn't get iOS 7 it would be nice if it is untethered for life (like how the 3GS is).

Once 7 drops im sure the hacker flood gates will open back up. Always gets sticky before a new OS drops..we've seen this year after year. Patience.

I definitely need this... Have two iDevices on 6.1.3 and would love to not have to hook it up to the damn computer every time I rebooted... I just hope it doesn't take too long...

For you, or for everyone in general?

I am sure that there are plenty of people on the iOS 6.1.3 firmware with limera1n devices that may be able to make good use of this if it is released.

Never seen a backwards jailbreak. Has anyone seen a jailbreak that actually goes back for one particular firmware version? backwards compatible yes, (break new and old) but breaking just one ios version, no. 7 is here now not released to the public but it's here. one last bit, If he can do it I hope it's not an exploit remotely related to what developer are eyeing to jailbreak io7.

Dang it totally misread the report. Disregard the rantings of this idiot! My bad!

I agree . 6.1.3 is a minor update just to close the evasion exploit. Just one person working on untether on 6.1.3 when iOS 7 is on the horizon , don't think is going to be easy to go untethered.

Where is the Apple TV v3 jailbreak? Anyone working on this?

  22. #17
The JB will be great for older devices that won't support iOS7.

This binary won't work with iOS 7, so there's just about no reason to hold onto it.

Will this work on my iPhone 5 with iOS7?
He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.
