'Chrome Downloader Plus' Adds Several New Downloading Features to Chrome for iOS
Google Chrome for iOS is a popular third-party Web browser offered by Google in the App Store. It already comes with some pretty neat features, but with the help of the jailbreak community, the application has the potential to be even better.
A new jailbreak tweak called Chrome Downloader Plus by iOS developer Jalal Ouraigua is now available in Cydia and brings a slew of new downloading features to Google Chrome for iOS. With the tweak, you will be able to download files from Web pages and enjoy an eye-candy interface at the same time.
Shown above, you can see the download process of downloading a file from the Internet. We have used the evad3rsí evasi0n jailbreak tool as an example. After tapping on their download link, Chrome Downloader Plus lets us choose to download or view the file. If we tap on download, the download will initiate and save to your /var/mobile partition. You will be able to see a history of your downloads via the Downloads tab.
As you download files, you will notice a badge in the Google Chrome application. The badge is meant to indicator how many concurrent downloads you have going on at one time. When the badge goes away, all downloads are done.
In addition, Chrome Downloader Plus includes a fully-integrated YouTube video downloader so you can save videos for offline viewing. You will be able to download most YouTube videos from YouTube right through the Google Chrome Web browser. Notably, this feature is for Google's Web application in Google Chrome only and the tweak doesn't support the YouTube application Google offers in the app Store:
Upon loading a supported video, you will notice a grabber at the bottom of the display that you can tap on and drag upwards. You will then get a quality selector. Tapping on the quality that you want will toggle the download or view interface where you can download the video if you choose to. YouTube downloads are organized separately from Web downloads and can be viewed under the YouTube tab. Videos are also saved to the /var/mobile partition.
All media that you download can be imported to your media library in iOS. The tweak includes CocoaNutsí famous Gremlin importing tool as a dependency to allow this to happen. This feature will allow you to watch your downloads from the Videos application, assuming you import them. Any audio files, or otherwise will go to their respective media applications as well.
Chrome Downloader Plus supports YouTube downloads for 144p videos up to 1080p videos. In addition, you can edit the fileís metadata before importing and sync those files back to iTunes.
Chrome Downloader Plus adds a preferences pane to the Settings application where you can configure some of the tweak's options:
You will be able to enable or disable the downloading of files from Google Chrome. Notably, you can enable and disable downloading files and YouTube videos independently, which is great for people that only want the tweak for one of the features and not the other.
You will also be able to disable YouTube video auto-play, choose the number of concurrent downloads you want to allow at one time, configure the file types you want to be able to download, and choose to receive download notifications when downloads complete.
We would say that Chrome Downloader Plus is very feature-filled and that itís worth the developerís asking price of $3.00. If you own Chrome Downloader already, Chrome Download Plus is available to you at a discounted upgrade price of $1.50.
Chrome Downloader Plus is compatible with a variety of iOS devices, including Phone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad with retina display (third and fourth generation), iPad Mini, iPod touch 5g, iPod touch 4g and iPod touch 3g. The tweak is compatible with the latest version of Google Chrome and works with iOS 6.0 and later.
