Default VLC App to Return to U.S. iOS App Store At Midnight Tonight

VLC, a popular media player on multiple platforms, will be returning to the United States App Store for iOS devices tonight at midnight. The application is already available for download in the New Zealand App Store.

The application was originally removed from the App Store a few years back for copyright issues and issues with the App Store’s terms and conditions. The latest version of the application that will be released again tonight will offer full support for all of Apple's latest devices, including the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5G's four-inch display.

VLC is popular because it can play most media types without the need for conversions. This is great for devices like the iPhone, which is known for its lack of support for certain file types.

Citing MacRumors, VLC for iOS is completely free and open source, and will include many useful features:

Today, it’s my pleasure to announce that VLC for iOS is back on the App Store. It’s available free of charge in any country, requires iOS 5.1 or later and runs on any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

This is more than an upgrade of the initial version: it’s a full re-write. From the ground-up. Relying on the power of MobileVLCKit and its underlying libvlc, we started with modern video and audio output modules offering faster drawing, full support for 10bit H264 encodings, retina displays and lower latency.
You can expect to find the application in the App Store for free when it becomes available tonight, so keep your eyes peeled!
