AT&T Begins Nationwide Rollout of FaceTime Over Cellular
According to the folks over at AppleInsider, AT&T appears to be in the middle of rolling out support for Appleís FaceTime video calling service for the iPhone on its cellular network. The move makes good on a promise to support all video chat apps over wireless by the end of the year.
Although no public announcement has been made regarding the latest policy change, many users are reporting a recent activation of FaceTime over cellular on both LTE and HSPA+, even those with the grandfathered unlimited data plans. Previously, the company stated it would be activating the service in June for LTE devices only. As of right now, the activation of the service seems to be verified in parts of New York, Maryland, Georgia, Louisiana, California and Hawaii. For obvious reasons voice and video quality isnít exactly on par with the Wi-Fi implementation of the service but it is close, suggesting AT&T is not throttling those subscribers who choose to use the feature while on the go.
The rollout comes less than one month after AT&T announced it would be enabling first-party video chat apps on its network over the course of 2013. At the time, the telecom said it expected to complete the rollout by the end of the year. While FaceTime over cellular debuted with iOS 6, AT&T limited its access to Mobile Share plan subscribers and LTE device owners with a tiered plan. The telecom began to expand support for FaceTime in November 2012 with the shift initially including a few users with grandfathered unlimited data plans. The carrier later limited the service to those with tiered data plans. As of right now, itís unclear how many or which locations AT&T has rolled out the service in, though the company appears to be targeting larger metropolitan areas first.

Works in Atlanta. Didn't even have to flip the switch. Got the first of the warnings yesterday too with the bad storms that rolled through. Finally AT&T, we're almost caught up with Japan of 10 years ago. LOL! Other than the fact they have 100 megabit d'loads already.

I really really don't want to nitpick, but why is this being referred to as a "rollout", the same way you would describe a deploying a new system, when all they have to do is set their network systems (routers?) to not interfere. Hell, I don't think they even have to do that much, seeing as people who are jail-broken have been able to use Facetime over 3G since the iPhone 4 was jail-broken, so this seems more like a client end restriction that may or may not monitored for, similar to tethering (although I'm pretty sure FT uses SSL so it's wouldn't be something a simple packet sniff could determine anyway.)

I've had it here in Montana since shortly after iPhone 5's release. One day it didn't work, the next day it did.

Enabled on my iP5 in Atlanta. I got a message on my phone Saturday afternoon that my carrier settings had been updated, not sure if that was them enabling it or something different. I'm grandfathered on an unlimited plan BTW.

I'm seeing the option to enable it but gives me the following message when I try to do so.
"FaceTime requires an active Wi-Fi connection or an eligible cellular data plan. To enable FaceTime over cellular on this account, contact AT&T at 611 or visit http://www.att.com/mywireless"
