Default Verizon Extends iPhone Upgrade Wait Time

Citing the evolution of the wireless business for a number of changes at Verizon today, the nation's largest carrier confirmed that Verizon subscribers in possession of an iPhone will now have to wait a little longer before qualifying for an upgrading to the next generation iPhone.

"In alignment with the terms of the contract, customers on a two-year agreement will be eligible for an upgrade at 24 months vs. today's early upgrade eligibility at 20 months," the carrier posted today. "This change aligns the upgrade date with the contract end date and is consistent with how the majority of customers purchase new phones today."

The first customers impacted by this change are customers whose contracts expire in January 2014. As always, customers may purchase a new phone at the full retail price at any time.
Foreshadowing the complete dissolution of the carrier's 'New Every Two' program, which ended in January of 2011, Verizon Wireless said today that it has continued to allow customers to utilize these expired credits. But, as of this Monday, April 15, these credits will no longer be available.

Fortunately, Verizon confirmed, customers may continue to share an upgrade with another person on an account but only if that customer is upgrading to a device within the same equipment category.

Wow! They (Verizon) are going the wrong way... Didn't T-mo start no contract, pay over time iPhone sales today?

I hope AT&T doesn't start this. Being the primary line on a 4 iPhone plan all with unlimited data, my upgrade is only 12 months. The other lines are 18 months.

Verizon's is cool, but am going with t-mobile if they have unlimited data.
Verizon's doesn't have unlimited data at all. It will cost $70 for 4gb data from Verizon's. so that two payment to pay.

This is not true anymore dude. They stopped the 1 year upgrade pricing last season. Well at least the lowest price at one year point was stopped. For all phones on a family or shared data plan with AT&T you get 'partial upgrade' pricing at 12 months and full upgrade pricing at 18 mos. There is no more "anchor" line on the family plans that gets special pricing.
Here to help if I can. If I can't I know someone who can!

Not sure what you mean by "anchor" but I've been doing "cross upgrade" for a few years now. I have a 2nd line (dumb phone) that I pay $10 a month and my primary and secondary line upgrade eligibility is one year apart. That's why I've been getting every iPhone release since 4. I had 4, 4S, 5 and I'm eligible to upgrade in October for the 5S. My secondary line stays on a Razr V3xx (those days at modmymoto.com).

On another note your new avatar looks like "Wells Fargo gone bad" as in the black Spider-Man. Lol.

Yes, Vin. I know the little cross grade trick. I do it too with my wife's phone. But it's a pretty specialized trick. People were talking pretty generally and I didn't want them to be confused by your statement. From iPhone 2G to iPhone 4S you could get a new phone at the lowest price 199,299,399 on just YOUR ONE phone - without having to do a cross grade with 2nd phone. The tiered upgrading just started last year with 4S to 5. So in short AT&T's plans are in keeping with the trend and no better than the others. Verizon likely also has a cross grade option.
