Mobile App Downloads Spike 11% in First Quarter of 2013
Mobile app downloads continue to grow at a surprisingly fast pace, not losing much momentum from the holiday download bonanza that closed 2012.
The world’s four leading app stores generated $2.2 billion in total revenue from 13.4 billion downloads in the first quarter of 2013, according to analyst firm Canalys.
Not surprisingly, Apple’s App Store took home the largest indexed proportion of revenue (74%). Google Play, however, captured a majority of all app downloads (51%).
“Apple’s App Store and Google Play remain the heavyweights in the app store world. In comparison, BlackBerry World and the Windows Phone Store remain distant challengers today, though they still should not be ignored,” says Canalys senior analyst Tim Shepherd.
