Default DirectionBar Now Available for Free in Cydia

On Sunday, ModMyi showed you DirectionBar, a free jailbreak tweak that adds a live compass icon to your Status Bar by iOS developer Rudolf Lichtner. DirectionBar updates in real time to show you what way North is, as shown above. While DirectionBar has been in its 'upcoming' stages for a few days now, the tweak is now readily available as a free download in the ModMyi repository.

After installing the tweak, you can head over the Settings application and open the DirectionBar preferences pane to configure the tweak’s options:

You’ll notice at the top that the tweak’s icon selector is grayed out. This is because you select the icon you want to use for the compass at the bottom of the display – it’s actually a line of buttons that you can select from. There are nine stock icons you can choose from by default, however the tweak is themable, so other developers can create their own icons that you will be able to download in Cydia.

After you make changes to the tweak’s preferences, you will need to respring to save your changes.

One thing we’ve noticed from our testing is that the compass icon in the Status Bar moves very fluidly. This tweak is a nice aesthetic feature for any iPhone, however one thing to note is that because it’s pulling your location, you might notice a small decrease in battery life. Nonetheless, this tweak is cool! Head over to Cydia’s ModMyi repository to download this tweak for free right now!

It would be better if he (or another developer if anyone's reading this and wouldn't mind following up on this idea) if the actual compass app icon was made "live" like live clock or weather icon making the actual compass icon "live" and a real life compass with a needle that moves...

I think someone is looking into that.

It would be even better if it showed the actual direction like SW, E, etc.

Yea that would be cool. Similar to a digital compass on a car.

With how much ya move your phone around that may get a bit annoying to always see the letters changing in the status bar. But if it were a live icon and you had a close up view of a small portion of a rotating compass, that would be cool.

You have to go to Settings-Privacy-Location Services-System Services and make sure compass calibration is ON. Mine was not working until I did this. It likely crashed due to a conflict with another tweak and the compass calibration not being on.

I think that 1/2 the fun in modding is figuring out whats compatible and what is not. Just because a tweak caused you problems, does not mean it will cause me problems as no two Jailbroken iPhones are exactly the same(the very reason why we do it at all) Im going to try it and I'll let you know if I like it or if it causes adverse effects with my current mods thank you.

It would be nice to be able to turn it off in settings rather than have to uninstall it.
